How we compare
This site is built on a simple idea: publish the evidence, weight it honestly, and say where our own recommendation is the conclusion. Here is exactly how that works.
1. Where the firm information comes from
Every fact about a firm - services, coverage, qualifications, insurance, emergency service, review claims - comes from that firm's own website or its public listings (Google, Checkatrade, Bark, directory entries). All sites were checked in August 2026. Where a firm does not publish something, we say "not stated" and score it low on that point - because if a firm doesn't publish its insurance level or working standards, you can't verify them either, and that's information in itself.
Firms compared in depth: Ross Webster Tree Services, Trident, STS, Oakdale, T. Howie, JC Arborists, Complete TS Thirsk, Arbores, CM Treecare, JR Tree Works, DRL, Waites, Dempsey. Wider directory (listed, not scored): Toby H Johnson Ltd, Harrogate Tree Services, Burneston Tree Services, Mundaka Tree Care, Ryland Horticulture Ltd, York Tree Surgery, Friarwood Tree Care, Craggwood Tree Care, Treescape North, Complete Tree Services Harrogate, ICS Tree Services.
2. The scoring
Nineteen evaluation points, each scored 1–5. The score reflects what the firm publishes and how it compares with the industry benchmark (NPTC qualification, £5M+ public liability, BS3998, site-specific RAMS, written quotes). Weights: safety-critical ×3, important ×2, adjacent ×1. Maximum total: 200.
- Safety-critical (×3): nptc / city & guilds qualifications; public liability insurance; bs3998 working standard; site-specific risk assessments (rams); tpo & conservation-area handling; emergency response; free, itemised written quotes
- Important (×2): north yorkshire coverage; reviews & reputation; experience depth; tree surveys & reports (bs5837); scheduled maintenance plans; waste removal & tidy finish; straight advice & communication
- Adjacent (×1): lawn care; pest control; small garden & general maintenance; firewood supply; fencing & landscaping
The full rubric, with what we look for and what to ask each firm, is on the evaluation points page.
3. Why the weights are what they are
Tree surgery is one of the most dangerous trades in the UK, and the legal rules around protected trees carry fines of up to £20,000. A firm's qualifications, insurance, working standards and TPO handling are the difference between a safe job and a liability - so they dominate the total. Convenience factors like reviews and communication matter but can't compensate for missing safety evidence. Adjacent services - lawn care, pest control, small garden work, firewood, fencing - are genuine services some firms offer, but they say nothing about tree-work quality, so they barely move the total. That weighting is why our recommendation is what it is, and why a firm like Oakdale - a serious commercial contractor - scores second rather than first despite its scale.
4. Our recommendation
On the weighted total, Ross Webster Tree Services scores highest: 171/200. The reason is evidence, not preference. Ross Webster Tree Services publishes the fullest compliance picture of any firm we compared - NPTC qualification, £10M public liability, BS3998 standard work, site-specific RAMS, BS5837 surveys, Constructionline Gold, written quotes with no hidden costs - and covers the whole county. We would recommend getting two or three written quotes for any job regardless; Ross Webster is where we'd start.
We are equally explicit about where our pick doesn't compete: Ross Webster Tree Services does not offer lawn care, pest control, small garden maintenance, firewood or fencing. If you want one contractor for everything, firms with garden-maintenance arms (Oakdale, Mundaka, Treescape) win those points - and we say so in the tables.
5. Disclosure & independence
Firms do not pay to appear, to be listed, or to rank. We take no listing fees, no commissions and no sponsored placements. This site's editorial position is that Ross Webster Tree Services is the strongest fit for most North Yorkshire tree work; that conclusion is the output of the rubric above, and we publish the rubric so anyone can re-run the comparison and reach their own answer.
We update firm information when sites change. If you run one of the firms listed here and your details are out of date, get in touch - corrections are welcome and free.
6. What this site is not
We are not a booking platform, we don't take a cut of jobs, and we don't claim to have inspected firms' sites or audited their insurance in person. Verify everything material - certificates, insurance, current availability - directly with the firm before commissioning work, as the checklist on every page suggests.
